Facing the main street are studios, including 4ht, 5th, 6th floor.

After a pirouette and plié, the National Ballet School of Canada made a grand jeté or "big leap" on Wednesday with the opening of its new Jarvis Street campus in downtown Toronto.

With the official unveiling of the Celia Franca Centre and the Margaret McCain Academic Building, phase one of Project Grand Jeté-- a $100 million expansion plan of the NBS's existing facilities -- is now completed.

Along with private donors, the renovation project was funded by the Ontario and federal government, with each contributing $20 million to the NBS.

"This is a great milestone in the history of the National Ballet School and the entire arts community of Ontario. Today is a dream come true," Ontario Culture Minister Madeleine Meilleur told the crowd at the opening ceremony.

An integration of heritage buildings and modern design, the new NBS campus also marks the revitalization of the north Jarvis Street community. The neighbourhood used to house the old CBC buildings as well as the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs -- but both the public broadcasting property and Maple Leafs Garden have since been abandoned.

Today, the western block of Jarvis Street, from Maitland Street south to Carlton Street, is headquarters to the country's top ballet students.

Thrilled about the new facilities, student dancers are most excited about the openness of the buildings. "The environment is incredible. The largeness of it is overwhelming," Lily Mariable, a grade 11 NBS student, told CTV.ca. She said the old buildings were hard to travel around because of the tight space. "Here you can just perform."

Mariable is alluding to the feeling of freedom one has when dancing in the fourth, fifth and sixth floor studios-- which are enclosed by floor to ceiling glass windows. "When you're dancing, people outside can see you. It's kind of like you're dancing for the public. You're dancing for the world. You're on stage," she said with exuberance.

Fellow grade 11 NBS student Matthew Chiu could not agree more. "All the glass is so open," he said. "It really helps you not be shy and coy about your dancing."

Engineers and architects consulted with the students prior to construction and both Mariable and Chui said that the end result reflects the needs of the dancers.

Mavis Staines, artistic director at NBS, believes the new space is student-centred in design. "The architectural approach weaves together 21st century innovation with the best of heritage architecture."

"I think our magical new home captures the power and energy of dance," Staines said.

Stage two of Project Grand Jeté involves the renovation of the school's Maitland Street properties into expanded residence facilities for students. It is scheduled to be completed by summer 2007.

The National Ballet School was founded in 1959 by Celia Franca -- of whom the new centre is named after.
